Loudoun County, Virginia is a suburban area 45 minutes outside of Washington D.C. In 2021, it became the center of the culture wars over education in the United States. Right wing media outlets began circulating news stories about how "Critical Race Theory" was becoming prevalent in classrooms around Northern Virginia. This caused a panic amongst parents, many of whom began to vent their frustrations at school board meetings.
Eventually these school board meetings got out-of-hand, with parents getting arrested and fights breaking out. The anger directed at the school board members ended in one of the members being forced to resign because of threats made to her home and children.
This film followed the outrage around “Critical Race Theory" amongst right-wing parents in the lead up to the 2021 Virginia Gubernatorial Election. In the midst of the fury, we find people who are actively working to push against these narratives and trying to build a Loudoun County that is representative of everyone.
This was a thesis film in which I served as a Producer, Director of Research, and provided on-set support. Not in Our Schools was selected to The 2023 Northern Virginia International Film Festival and the 2023 Student World Impact Festival.
