Graffiti in the Wild
Modern Graffiti arose in the 1970’s in the Bronx, as the borough was burning and decaying. Initially seen as a defacement of property and form of public blight, graffiti has evolved since to bring character to many abandoned spaces. This project focuses on how the vibrance of graffiti in blighted spaces, rather than blighted spaces being as a result of graffiti. The empty and abandoned spaces of Central New York allow graffiti to thrive as an art. The best graffiti often serves as a commentary on the space around it. I tried to use my camera to document that in these photos. Intentionally, there are no people in this project, but rather follows the spaces as a character.
